Rates

As a starting point, I refer to the hourly rates recommended by the Danish Union of Journalists. However, rates may also be negotiated on an individual basis, for example as a per-page rate or as payment by the day, week or month.

Union-recommended hourly rates as of March, 2008, are as follows (all rates are based on use in a single media):

General journalism assignments:
DKK 701

Teaching assignments and journalism assignments based on specialised knowledge:
DKK 875

PR and communications assignments:
DKK 1,060

Translations are not included in the union's recommended rates; here my hourly rate is:
DKK 750

Higher rates are applied to work which is used in more than one media.

Documented expenses in connection with assignments are billed separately according to vouchers; compensation for transportation via my own car is calculated on a per-kilometre basis using the government rate.

Please note that although many types of journalistic work are not subject to VAT, there are certain kinds of assignments – teaching, for example - to which the Danish VAT rate of 25% must be added.

More information on the above prices, including multiple-media rates, may be found on the Union of Journalists website.
